Cooking A Change

Recently I have started watching kind of a silly show. It is called “Worst Cooks in America”. I define this as “Silly”; because I am sure there are lots of different opinions about the show. I also know there are a few things that they could do differently on the show that would make it a littler easier for the general public to follow.

For those of you who have no idea what this show is; It is about random Americans who have no idea how to cook, at all. They get a chance to learn how to cook, they learn a handful of skills and learn where a lot of different foods come from. A lot of these people do not know much at all about food. The ones who pick up on skills and techniques the most get the chance to win some money. Long story short, this show has caught my attention, for now, in how it shows there are many approaches to cooking.

Well when I first started watching it, I couldn’t help but think; “I do not understand how hard some of the simpler cooking processes are for some people”. Then I slowly started to understand. There truly are people out there who are never taught the basics of cooking. Like how to scramble an egg, or how to bake a cake. Some people just do not know how to do it. Some people have not had someone around them who could show them the simple basics. The simple steps. Or even just the little things.

Months ago when I started showing my son how to make bread, and together we made “Hulk Bread” (which is homemade bread with green dye); I did not realize how rare that skill would be. How valuable those basics really could be for him. How to cook anything is a big skill. It is a step to independence. It is also really awesome how much my kids know now just because of how much time we have put into SHOWING them, teaching them. We make things together a lot more often nowadays. But I would not expect my babies to cook their own breakfast or figure out their own meal on their own. Not being taught anything they would have no idea even where to start. Not at all, until them and us were sure they were ready, and genuinely prepared for such an adventure.

That is right, cooking, baking, eating; All of those things should be classified as an adventure. If it is not something fun, or something truly needed in your life then you are missing out. But that is not for me or anyone else to tell you. You should know how fun those things can be.

Knowing what I know now, I do not want to make the same mistakes as those people all around me in this World. I want to learn from everyone and everything around me. Right now I am learning the importance of cooking and knowing how to do at least some things properly. I am learning the importance of teaching my kids skills they will truly need in their life. I want to be better in a lot of different areas in my life. Learning how to make cost efficient dinners that taste amazing is really reaching close to one of the top goals on my list. But since cooking is an everyday things, I can work on that a little bit at a time daily. And I can sure as heck pass that knowledge down to the babies.

Unique Advice for Today: Learn more practical skills. Like how to cook or prepare a meal. But also make sure you start passing the knowledge you have already, down to your children so they know what to do as well. Even if you do not know much, you can still learn and you are still capable of improving the amount of knowledge you all have in your lives.

The truth behind it all, is I can not imagine not having any basic skills in the kitchen at all. My mother was so great to show me how to make things, how to start the basics, and how to customize some things to my liking. I plan to pass that down my kids. I want them to be able to cook for themselves. Whether they have to or not. If I would have never learned any of that, then my babies would not have a nice/edible meal everyday.

Cooking, cleaning, baking, organizing, it is all hard work. It all takes a little effort and a lot of patience. But it is truly worth bettering your life and the lives of those around you.

I know it, I do. I have said that a lot, especially lately but I will continue to say it. Around here that is what we strive for;

To Better our lives, to better the lives of our families; Learning to understand the unknown; Learning how/why to have a relationship with God; Also finding/achieving our life purpose. We are here to make a difference and make it worth it. 😉

So as far as I am concerned I will keep on telling ALL of you that you are all capable of amazing things and you are all loved.
